| Web hosting
providers rent out storage on computers
known as servers on a monthly basis. This
storage can be used for a variety of
purposes, but usually when referring to
"web hosts" we are referring to companies
that store or "host" web sites. Most starter
hosting plans are around $5-10 a month, and
provide everything you need to manage a web
site, the ability install blogs, etc. |

 |
| Anytime you
see a "www.example.com" type web
address, that's a domain name, or web
address. We recommend you reserve a domain
name before selecting a web host through an
accredited provider such as
GoDaddy.
Your web host will then give you a
nameserver address that will allow you to
sync your web hosting account and your
domain name automatically. |

 |
| If you want
to make a blog, look for web hosts that
offer "wordpress" pre-installed to make life
easier. If you will be using a visual editor
such as FrontPage, look for "FrontPage"
hosting. Make sure your host supports PHP
scripts. Unix/Linux hosting is more often
used at a beginning level than Windows
hosting. If you are unsure, look at a
hosting package feature-by-feature. |

 |
| For
designing actual HTML pages, FrontPage is as
easy to use as Microsoft Word and does
everything including, uploading your files
to the server through what's called FTP
(file transfer protocal).
Paint Shop Pro
is ideal for making images for logos and
buttons, or try
LogoWorks.
Your hosting package will already have basic
analytics on it to track visitors, and will
have email capabilities. |
